the built environment

Building is one of the most polluting human activities, being responsible for a third of carbon emissions, air pollution, material resource use, and waste production, while only bringing in an estimated 4% of GDP.

urban mining

Building requires the extraction of earth on site. In Belgium, around 37 million tons per year is excavated, of which around 45% is being dumped or landfilled as waste. These excavated earths are a primary, unpolluted, undisturbed resource: the city is our quarry.

production process

BC materials operates in a de- and remountable production warehouse in the centre of Brussels, close to resources and construction activity. BC production process is in between industry and craftsmanship.

cycles of buildings

Although we cannot anticipate the life of the built environment, we can assure that the resulting buildings can be endlessly repaired, reused or returned to nature; we can assure that the built environment is healthy, beautiful and low or zero carbon.

On the occasion of Les Usages du Monde, an exhibition organized by the Arc en Rêve architecture center at Gare Saint-Sauveur as part of Lille Capital of Design 2020, the Belgian cooperative BC materials set out to create a series of video capsules highlighting the different stages of the process of reusing construction site soil.

Together with Cinzia Romanin, co-director, we proposed collaborating with artist and sound engineer Daniel Perez Hajdu to create a soundscape where the atmospheres of each capsule flow seamlessly into one another. Broadcast through sound showers dispersed throughout the scenography, this soundscape guides visitors, transporting them from one landscape to another, immersing them in the cycle of earth’s transformations and uses.

The capsules, along with the soundscape, subsequently traveled to various exhibitions with BC materials, including the Lisbon Architecture Triennale (Portugal, 2021) and the « Same Same but Different » exhibition at the Z33 Museum of Contemporary Art (Belgium, 2022).
